Verifying with Electrum

Electrum is a desktop Bitcoin wallet with a built-in message-signing tool. You copy Scrya’s message into Electrum, sign it and paste the signature back. Signing doesn’t send anything or cost a fee.

What you can verify with Electrum

Bitcoin (BTC) on the Bitcoin network. Electrum can sign with addresses starting 1 (legacy), 3 (P2SH-SegWit) or bc1q (native SegWit).

Before you start

  • Find your address. Open the Addresses tab. If you can’t see it, choose View → Show Addresses. The Receive tab gives you a new address, which won’t hold funds yet.
  • Pick the address that holds your funds. Scrya reads the balance of the one address you enter. If your balance is spread across several addresses, use Add address to verify more than one.
  • Use a wallet that can sign. Electrum can only sign with addresses from the wallet that’s open. It needs the wallet’s keys, or a connected hardware wallet.

Sign with Electrum

  1. Copy the message. On your request, click Start Verification, choose Private wallet, then Electrum. Enter your Bitcoin address and click Copy next to the message. Don’t retype it, because one changed character makes the signature invalid.
  2. Open Electrum’s signing tool. Choose Tools → Sign/verify message from the menu bar. As a shortcut, right-click your address on the Addresses tab and choose Sign/verify message. This fills in the address for you.
  3. Paste the message and your address. Paste the message into the Message box. Enter your Bitcoin address in the Address field. Use the exact address you entered in Scrya.
  4. Click Sign and unlock. Electrum asks for your wallet password. If your wallet is on a hardware device, confirm the signature on the device instead.
  5. Copy the signature back. A Base64 signature (a long string of letters, numbers and symbols) appears in the Signature box. Copy all of it. Paste it into Scrya’s Signature field as a single line with no extra spaces or line breaks. Then click Submit for Verification.

Troubleshooting

  • Sign is greyed out or Electrum shows an error. The address isn’t part of the open wallet. Open the wallet that holds it, or check for a typo.
  • Your address starts with bc1p (Taproot). Scrya can’t verify Taproot addresses by signing. Use an address starting 1, 3 or bc1q.
  • Your wallet is watch-only. A watch-only wallet has no keys, so it can’t sign. Open the wallet that has the keys, or connect its hardware wallet.
  • The signature is rejected. Check you copied the whole signature as a single line and didn’t change the message.
  • The message expired. Messages last 15 minutes. Click Back, choose Electrum again and re-enter your address.
